Individual Customer Appeal

High street retailers can significantly enhance the buying experience of their customers through Wirecard's Bluetooth BLE smart payment.

The innovative wireless technology allows an individual approach and new customer loyalty schemes directly at the point of sale. Mobile payment via smartphones is also much easier and more convenient.

BLE enables personalised, mobile and contactless payment via smartphones. As one of the first payment companies worldwide, Wirecard has integrated Bluetooth BLE smart payment technology into its mobile wallet platform. With this system, customers can make payments directly with any employee in the shop. This means there is no longer a need to queue at the till, which speeds up the checkout process.

High street retailers can directly send potential customers within a range of up to 30 metres messages to their smartphone. These can target individuals who have already entered the shop, but also those who are passing by in the street, drawing their attention to special offers in store.

Retailers can identify returning customers as soon as they enter the shop, and therefore talk to them by name. Notifications about pre-ordered products can also be sent, as well as information on whether a particular member of staff is in store or if a customer's favourite product is on offer.

For enclosed spaces and roofed outdoor areas, the location tracking of customers through BLE and small transmitter beacons is more precise than with other methods. Customers can therefore be guided towards special discount offers while in the shop, for example. Indoor navigation can also be provided if customers are looking for a particular product.

Features & benefits

  • Support for marketing activities

Through digital communications with customers, high street retailers can acquire comprehensive customer data, which had previously been the preserve of online shops.

  • BLE is already widespread standard

Many smartphones, tablets and PCs already feature BLE technology today. These include all Apple models from the iPhone 4S onwards as well as Android devices Google Nexus, HTC One and Samsung Galaxy.

  • Low energy consumption

The operation of BLE technology also requires very little energy. The battery life of the transmitters is up to two years. This is a major benefit for customers as it does not drain the battery of their smartphone.

  • Beacons are getting cheaper and cheaper

The cost of inconspicuous transmitter beacons which would need to be installed in the shops has been falling steadily. Beacons are now available for less than EUR 10 each.
