Velocity check

Frequency checks used to manage risks.

How does a velocity check work?

The aim of a velocity check is to identify fraud patterns in payment transactions. Recurring patterns and relationships between transactions within a specified (short) period of time are examined.

The check can be based on various types of data, such as IP address, device ID, credit card number, or payment method. Potential checks include: How many transactions has a customer performed in the last 24 hours? How much has a customer spent in the last 24 hours? How many orders have been placed using the same credit card number in the last 24 hours?

Example: If a fraudster makes several large payments within the space of a few minutes, this is an abnormality that should be investigated more closely because it is not typical behavior for an ordinary customer.
