Bank Identification Number (BIN)

The first six numbers of a credit or debit card.

What is a BIN?

A BIN (Bank Identification Number) is used to identify a credit or debit card and encodes the card’s type and issuing bank. For this reason, it is often also referred to as an “Issuer Identification Number” (IIN). The BIN is used in IP/BIN checks, for example.

Particularly when transferring money to another country, other numbers are usually used for identification purposes, including the SWIFT code and IBAN.
