What role does provisioning play in NFC payments?

In connection with payments via near-field communication (NFC), “provisioning” means placing card data on an NFC-enabled smartphone so its user can make mobile payments. The card data is stored in a secure place like the phone’s SIM card.

Paying by NFC: How do NFC-capable smartphones work?

There are two prerequisites for NFC payments to work: The smartphone and card reader must both have an NFC chip installed, and the relevant bank data has to be stored on the phone via NFC. The bank directly provides the data. For an NFC payment to take place, the two devices have to be very close together. Usually the distance between them may not exceed about 10 centimeters. To make a payment, it’s only necessary to hold one above the other.
