Ratskeller München moves online

Ratskeller muenchen moves online

The coronavirus pandemic has put strain on businesses in many industries, but gastronomy in particular. When restaurants in Germany were forced to close their doors to customers in support of social distancing, many adapted by offering takeaway services. Ratskeller München, a well-established, traditional Bavarian restaurant in the heart of Munich, did just that. But its answer to continuing business was in the cellar, not the kitchen.

Digital transformation: Restaurant to wine delivery service

Ratskeller München began a wine delivery service, for which it required a quick-to-set-up, simple payment method for customers—one that minimized contact to maximize hygiene. This is where Wirecard, in collaboration with stampayGO, could offer support. The collaboration now enables Ratskeller München to accept payment in two ways.

Customers can choose whether to pay via Pay by Link or QR code. With Pay by Link, Ratskeller München simply creates and sends a personalized payment link to the customer via their preferred channel: email, social media, or text message. This link redirects to a secure payment page hosted by Wirecard for the customer to complete payment with their credit or debit card, digital wallet (Apple Pay or Google Pay, for example), or another popular payment method.

Alternatively, if a customer wants to pay on delivery, they can choose to pay via QR code. QR codes are becoming more and more popular for payment transactions. stampayGo is specialized in “scan, pay, go” technology, offering merchants the ability to accept payment while on the move. For Ratskeller München, this means payment on delivery, as the customer scans a QR code on the driver’s smartphone—no extra hardware required. The customer can then choose their preferred payment method.

Taking payment online: Case benefits

With no terminal or online shop needed, Pay by Link gives Ratskeller München a fast and simple way to digitally serve customers from a distance—and accept payment upfront, before the precious cargo goes out. And even when customers choose to pay on delivery by scanning a QR code, no direct contact is needed, maximizing hygiene and safety for all. Both the merchant and the customer receive payment confirmation via app notification, so there is no worry about unpaid goods. Despite loosened restrictions on restaurants in Bavaria, Ratskeller München is pleased with the seamless payment process for its wine delivery service and plans to continue with the setup.

COVID-19 and new demand for digital payment methods

The effects of the coronavirus pandemic have shaken the entire globe—just as a new digital era of retail dawns in many countries. These two phenomena combined will have lasting effects on how the world carries out business and the payment methods used to do so. Many businesses, like Ratskeller München, will need to prepare for a boom in demand for contactless payment to adapt to changing customer demands. Thankfully, there are a plethora of new options available to supportenterprises in taking business online quickly and successfully.
