Payments Source has named Wirecard Chief Product Officer Susanne Steidl to its 2018 list of the "25 Most Influential Women in Payments". Steidl, based in Munich, is responsible for major product innovations at Wirecard and led the company’s 2017 expansion into the U.S. market. Steidl began her Wirecard career as Senior Product Manager in 2006 and moved on to the role of Executive Vice President of Issuing Services for Wirecard Technologies GmbH.
“The Most Influential Women in Payments are the ones taking risks with new ideas and investments and developing the technology that will forever change the way people handle money,” Payments Source said in a statement. “They not only set an example for their peers but also are unafraid to learn from newcomers and are diligent about encouraging a freshness and diversity of ideas.”
Steidl’s background in the tech industry and her extensive international experience have made her a natural leader in the now rapidly evolving payments landscape. A native of Austria, she was educated there and in Chile, Denmark, Italy, and the Philippines in the fields of psychology and business administration, Steidl came to the payments industry from the tech world, where she was Managing Director of Axxom Software in Romania.
“My goal is to put payments in the background. They should be effortless, seamless, and borderless for the user," Steidl said. "We have a global licensing and partnership framework that is working toward fully automated, real-time payment systems. Add smart data and elegant architecture, and there it is: ease of payments from Australia to the North Pole, from the hardworking cruise ship engineer in the Caribbean to their grandmother in the Philippines, from a vendor selling in Somalian Schillings to the customer paying in US dollars. This is what I want to achieve.”
“Susanne has been instrumental in our North America operations since we first embarked on Wirecard’s acquisition of our business from Citi in 2016,” said Wirecard’s North America Managing Director Deirdre Ives. “Her work ethic, her astute and broad understanding of the industry, and her boldness in innovation have been inspirational to me and to our whole team.”
Her advice to other women – and anyone else – working in the payments industry? “Voice your objectives and pursue them. Don’t make it about gender – rely on your brain.”
