EZ-Link - Mobile phone as a top up terminal

To date, more than 17 million CEPAS-compliant ez-link cards have been issued, with over 20,000 retail acceptance points. In 2013, EZ-Link launched the “My EZ-Link Mobile” application, the world’s first Near Field Communication (NFC) mobile application for contactless card top-ups using Wirecard’s mobile top up service. With Wirecard’s support, consumers can now conveniently add credit to their ez-link cards on the go, simply by using an NFC-enabled smartphone.

With strong growth in the development of NFC handsets and mobile apps, EZ-Link saw an opportunity to leverage these technologies in its business.  EZ-Link was looking for a secure, established partner to help increase convenience for cardholders and expand top up services in the most cost-effective, efficient and hassle-free way possible. The intention was to enable more EZ-Link cardholders to add funds to their mobile wallets on the go.


There are several ways to conveniently top up funds on a physical prepaid card such as the one available from EZ-Link: simply visit an electronic top up kiosk, purchase an external card reader (which connects to a computer via USB and allows users to top up from the EZ-Link Online webpage), or use an NFC-enabled mobile phone. Given the proliferation of smartphones and mobile services in Singapore (according to Nielsen research, smartphone penetration is 87%), what easier way is there to top up funds on a physical card than via smartphones, which are already widely available and used by consumers? And at the same time, this mobile solution taps into the latest technology in the field of mobile payments, namely NFC.

With our expertise in mobile payments and payment processing, Wirecard is the perfect partner to support the EZ-Link NFC top up app. NFC technology enables the smartphone to emulate a top up station and, when linked with Wirecard’s mobile platform for payment processing and the EZ-Link’s mobile app, it allows users to perform specific key functions, such as topping up a prepaid card from any location. The top up process is entirely cashless, allowing users to pay with their credit or debit cards. With Wirecard’s payment processing platform, users are able to enjoy the convenience of topping up from anywhere – all in a matter of seconds!

The payment process also utilises tokenisation, a security measure that encrypts users’ credit card numbers. Encrypted data is used for subsequent top up payments, eliminating the need to enter a credit card number every time a top up is initiated.

The payment solution for EZ-Link was created with two overarching objectives in mind: greater user convenience and secure transaction management.
